Wallsend Town Centre Improvements

We have secured funding to deliver a range of improvements in Wallsend town centre.

The proposals in this consultation support North Tyneside Council's ambitions for 'Better Lives for All' and 'Places to Be Proud Of', while helping to deliver the long-term Ambition for Wallsend regeneration plan.


The Ambition for Wallsend plan focuses on three priorities:

  • Making the town centre and surrounding neighbourhoods great places to live and visit.
  • Improving the quality and choice of housing in Wallsend.
  • Helping local people access good jobs and opportunities.

Our Vision

Our vision is to create a vibrant, welcoming and well-connected Wallsend where people can live, work, visit and travel safely, while celebrating the town's heritage and supporting future growth.

To help achieve this vision, we are proposing improvements that will:

  • Create a more attractive and welcoming town centre where people want to spend more time.
  • Make it easier and safer for people to walk, wheel and cycle around the town centre.
  • Improve connections to shops, services, schools, workplaces and public transport.
  • Support local businesses by attracting more shoppers, visitors and investment.
  • Celebrate Wallsend's identity and heritage while creating spaces for community events and activities.


Proposed Improvements

1. Forum Square

Improvements to the town square between the Forum Shopping Centre and The Anson, including:

  • New paving.
  • More seating.
  • New planting.
  • Improved lighting.
  • Better facilities for festivals and community events.
  • Opportunities to celebrate Wallsend's history and identity.

2. High Street

Improvements to parts of the High Street, including:

  • New paving in key locations.
  • New and improved crossing points to help people move around safely.

3. Elton Street East Junction

Improvements to roads from North Road via David Street to a safer, more controlled junction at Station Road–Elton Street for those cycling and walking.

4. West Street and Rutland Road

Improvements to West Street and Rutland Road including full resurfacing, and a new cycleway separated from traffic. This will create a safer connection between the Coast Road and North Road for people travelling by bike and new crossings will make it easier and safer for people to cross the road.

Wider Investment in Wallsend

These proposals form part of wider plans to invest in and improve Wallsend, including:

  • £8.9 million of investment from the North East Mayoral Strategic Authority to expand Newcastle College's Energy Academy. This will increase the number of student and training places to more than 1,200, helping local people gain qualifications in offshore energy and subsea engineering and access jobs in the energy sector along the River Tyne.
  • Plans to transform Segedunum Roman Fort and Museum, building on more than £1.7 million already invested in a new roof, ventilation system and lift.
  • Further improvements to streets, public spaces and routes for walking, wheeling and cycling in the future.


Funding

These improvements will be paid for through external funding.

North Tyneside has been allocated more than £6 million through the Department for Transport's City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement programme for improvements in Wallsend.

This funding is part of a wider investment awarded to the North East Mayoral Strategic Authority on behalf of the seven local authorities across the North East.

The funding can only be used for projects that improve public spaces and make it easier, safer and more attractive for people to walk, wheel or cycle.

The funding allocation is subject to final consideration and approval by the North East Mayoral Strategic Authority.
