West Street and Rutland Road
The Council’s Cycling Strategy and Local Cycling, Walking and Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP) identifies a requirement for a cycle route running from the Coast Road to Wallsend Town Centre and from there to Hadrian’s Cycleway next to the River Tyne.
West Street has been identified as the most appropriate route as it links via the underpass beneath the Coast Road to the A1058 (Coast Road) cycleway between Newcastle and the Coast.
West Street is wide enough to enable a safe, high quality, segregated cycleway to be provided alongside upgraded footpaths and resurfacing the full length of West Street to provide a smoother and more durable surface.
The proposals will make it easier and safer for people to walk, wheel and cycle along West Street and Rutland Road. This includes new and improved crossings to make it easier and safer to cross these busy roads:
A new crossing on West Street between the pedestrian exit from Western School and the Lindisfarne Club
The existing pedestrian crossing at the southern end of West Street will be upgraded so that both people walking and people cycling can use it
A new parallel crossing on Rutland Road, with separate crossing areas for people walking and people cycling
