High Street and Laburnum Avenue
A range of improvements to High Street East and West are planned to create a safer, more accessible and attractive environment for everyone who lives in, works in and visits the area.
Key sections of footpath will be resurfaced to provide smoother and more comfortable routes, while raised crossings across side roads will improve connectivity and make it easier to move around on foot. It is also proposed to resurface the central carriageway providing a smoother and more durable road surface. Existing street furniture, lighting and traffic signal infrastructure will also be improved where needed.
The areas to be improved are:
High Street West
New paving on the northern side of High Street West between West Street and the Aldi supermarket. The zebra crossing outside the Duke of York will be moved west and upgraded to a parallel crossing for both pedestrians and cyclists. The bus stop outside York Court will be relocated east of the Duke of York. A new zebra crossing will be provided next to the Aldi supermarket.
New paving on the southern side of High Street West between West Street and Portugal Place. This includes continuing the paving across the entry to Portugal Place itself.
New paving on the southern side of High Street West either side of the junction with Carville Road and relocation of the bus stop to the west.
Continuation of footpath paving across the side road entry to Border Road, Carville Road and Atkinson Street and extension of the footpath with a raised table across the Thames Gardens entry to the car park

Laburnum Avenue crossing
It is also suggested that, in order to direct cyclists along a quiet north-south route (linking North Road to Hadrian’s Cycleway) that a crossing on the High Street between Laburnum Avenue and Chestnut Street could be created.
This would require closure of Laburnum Avenue and Chestnut Street to vehicles in both directions. The crossing would provide a safe way of crossing the High Street and linking to Park Road and then south to Hadrian’s Cycleway.
