Connecting Communities

We have secured funding to deliver a range of improvements across North Tyneside.

The aim is to make it easier for people to get around, improve links between communities, support local businesses and jobs, and create a transport network that is accessible, reliable and better for the environment.

These improvements are designed to make everyday journeys easier, whether people are walking, using a wheelchair or mobility aid, cycling, taking public transport, travelling to school, visiting local centres, or accessing local services.

Wherever possible, the schemes will be delivered alongside road maintenance, accessibility improvements and enhancements to public spaces.

The proposals have been developed to address gaps in the current transport network, improve access to important destinations, and give residents more choice in how they travel.

Our Vision

  • Safer and more accessible neighbourhoods.
  • Improved connections to schools, employment, local centres and public transport.
  • Better quality public realm and walking environments.
  • Highway maintenance and accessibility improvements delivered alongside the funded works where possible.
  • Improved health, wellbeing and economic outcomes through enhanced connectivity.

Proposed Improvements

1. Palmersville Metro – Connected Stations

Creating better access to the Metro Station for those walking, wheeling, and cycling, alongside installing controlled crossings for road safety.

2. Foxhunters to Whitley Bay

A safer and easier route between Foxhunters Roundabout and Whitley Bay Metro Station.

3. Killingworth Links

A strategic connectivity scheme designed to improve links between Killingworth Town Centre and the wider Waggonway.

4. Seaton Burn to Dudley

Aiming to improve an important local route connecting Seaton Burn and Dudley, and supporting safe access to North Gosforth Academy.

Funding

These improvements will be paid for through external funding.

North Tyneside Council has been allocated up to £30 million through the Department for Transport's City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement programme for improvements.

This funding is part of a wider investment awarded to the North East Mayoral Strategic Authority on behalf of the seven local authorities across the North East.

The funding can only be used for projects that improve public spaces and make it easier, safer and more attractive for people to walk, wheel or cycle.
