Proposals for Killingworth Lakeside Park

In summer 2024, we asked local residents, visitors, and community groups for their views on how Killingworth Lakeside Park could be improved. Thank you to everyone who shared their ideas.

If you want to look at the original consultation, results of this consultation and the initial plan you can find this information easily here

Since then, we’ve been developing proposals based on your feedback, and we’re now excited to share the updated plans. We would love to hear what you think.

Our vision is to transform Killingworth Lake into a vibrant, welcoming, and ecology-friendly destination — a place for play, relaxation, and connecting with nature. Proposed improvements include a new play area, enhanced walking and cycling routes, upgraded facilities, and measures to support biodiversity.

Your input continues to be vital in shaping the future of this much-loved local space. Please take a few moments to look through the designs below, view the proposal map and complete our questionnaire.

Here’s how your 2024 feedback has influenced the designs:

  • Play Equipment: You asked for more exciting and varied play opportunities for all ages. The new designs include adventurous climbing structures, imaginative play zones, and inclusive features for all abilities.

  • Café and Seating: You wanted a better café and covered seating. We are exploring a new café hub with indoor seating for families and groups.

  • Toilets: You requested public toilets. The proposals include a new block with a fully equipped Changing Places facility and two accessible, gender-neutral toilets.

  • Landscaping: Concerns about swans and other birds creating mess in key areas have been considered in the landscaping and seating layouts.

  • Safety: To address anti-social behaviour, the designs include improved lighting, clear sightlines, and 360° CCTV coverage.

  • Children’s Input: Pupils from Bailey Green Primary School helped shape the new play area. Through a creative workshop, children aged 5–10 shared their ideas for a “dream playground.” Their favourite features — from high-energy climbing challenges and big slides to imaginative and sensory play — have been incorporated, ensuring the play area reflects the creativity and priorities of local children.

Your feedback has been central to shaping these proposals, and we look forward to hearing your thoughts on the next stage of development.
