Proposed road safety scheme - Billy Mill Lane, North Shields

Consultation has concluded

This consultation invites residents from Billy Mill Lane and the surrounding area to comment on a proposed road safety scheme, which includes introducing a toucan crossing to aid active travel.

The Proposal

  • Toucan (signalised) crossing on Billy Mill Lane as shown in the proposal plan
  • Dropped kerbs to assist with crossing roads and entering St Thomas More school
  • Corduroy tactile paving to help road users with visual impairments
  • Paving to better link walking routes
  • Short two way cycle route
  • Existing road markings refreshed

Please be aware, the proposed crossing will not replace the existing school crossing patrol for St Thomas More RC high school. However, it will change how it currently operates. Presently, the school crossing patrol stands at Billy Mill Lane and Cragside Avenue in the morning, and moves to the site of the proposed crossing in the afternoon. This scheme will now mean the school crossing patrol will operate at the junction of Billy Mill Lane and Cragside Avenue in both mornings and afternoons. Therefore, providing two safe crossing facilities for pupils travelling to school.
