Consultation on the the future of Monkseaton High School
Give us your feedback on the future of Monkseaton High School, including the potential closure from 31 August 2026.
Monkseaton High School is located in Whitley Bay and provides education for pupils from Year 9 through to Year 13. The school has a large financial deficit which is projected to increase to over £7 million by 2026. This is impacting on the stability of the school and is at risk of impacting the quality of education being offered, despite the best efforts of school leaders and teachers.
The Council has worked alongside Monkseaton High School leaders and the Government to do everything possible to reduce the deficit. However, falling pupil numbers at the school is impacting the amount of funding the school receives.
Lower birth rates and parental choice in this part of North Tyneside means that the school is only operating at just over 50% capacity, with only one in five children from the local community attending Monkseaton High School.
Over recent years the Council has worked alongside Monkseaton High School leaders to explore a range of options to secure the future of the school. These have included:
Moving the three-tier system to a two-tier system of education
Academisation
Bringing the school together with another local school under one governing body
Changing to a secondary school
Closing the sixth form
The council now believes that without long term changes to pupil numbers and Government funding beyond its control, it will not be possible to secure the future of the school.
