Healthy, connected and inclusive places
We want North Tyneside to be a place where everyone feels happy, healthy, and safe. This means having good homes, parks, schools, transport, and places to play and meet friends.
As the Borough's population changes new challenges for services and infrastructure will emerge. The projected decline in the number of children in North Tyneside will have implications for school provision and continued growth in older residents will increase demand for health services. New housing growth won’t change those overall trends but could mean the places where services are needed will change to ensure they are close to the communities they serve.
We would welcome your feedback on the proposals
Health and Wellbeing
In the last two decades, many of the indicators of health and wellbeing have improved significantly in North Tyneside. However, they remain today on average worse than those for England. Health inequalities persist within the borough with significantly different outcomes for residents in different parts of the borough for life expectancy and healthy lives.
What is being proposed in this consultation
- Support existing, and seek new health facilities, recreation, built and outdoor sports provision.
- Encourage healthier lifestyles by continuing to prevent new takeaways opening where evidence says they could be harmful.
- Continue to require new homes to be designed with features that make them more accessible for people with mobility issues.
Transport, Noise and Air Quality
The North East Local Transport Plan and the North Tyneside Transport Strategy form the basis of a transport vision for North Tyneside, underpinned by five key principles:
- Reduce carbon emissions from transport.
- Improve health outcomes.
- Support inclusive economic growth.
- Improve connectivity.
- Manage demand and enable smart choices for all.
What is being proposed in this consultation
- Support proposals that make it easier to walk, wheel and cycle.
- Ensure access to public transport like buses and the Metro, and consider opportunities to make best use of the Northumberland Line.
- Reduce overall traffic growth, mitigating potential impacts and supporting investment in key highway routes including the A19.
Community Infrastructure and Green Spaces
Community facilities provide for the health and wellbeing, social and educational needs of all members of the community. This can include schools, health facilities, libraries as well as playing pitches and indoor sports.
Meanwhile, North Tyneside has a diverse mix of green spaces that help to define the character and quality of the environment in the area and are important areas that provide opportunities for nature recovery. This includes large areas such as the Rising Sun Country Park, beaches, and green corridors as well as the Borough’s parks and local nature reserves.
- Ensure appropriate new provision of infrastructure and improvements to existing facilities.
- Continue to protect and enhance open space and green infrastructure.
- Keep existing levels of access to green spaces and support proposals that help improve access.
- Seek new development that includes sufficient areas of green space, areas for play and facilities such as playing pitches where required.
- Ensure development makes appropriate contributions to enable enhancements to existing green spaces where required.
Developer contributions
The funding for infrastructure needed to help support growth in North Tyneside and address the potential impacts of proposals for development is secured through the planning application process. Within North Tyneside developer contributions are secured through:
- Planning Obligations (also known as s106 agreements) to address impacts of specific planning applications, and
- Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) to support the investment in infrastructure and facilities across the Borough.
