Silverdale School Consultation
Proposal to relocate the primary phase of Silverdale School to the Forest Hall Primary School site
We want to hear your views on proposals to relocate the primary phase of Silverdale School into the former Forest Hall Primary School site.
The consultation is seeking views on a proposal to:
- Relocate the primary phase of Silverdale School from the Langdale Centre, Wallsend, to the former Forest Hall Primary School site on Delaval Road, Forest Hall.
This would mean:
- Primary-aged pupils (4 to 11 years) would be educated at the Forest Hall site.
- The Langdale Centre would no longer be used as the primary phase location for Silverdale School.
- The former Forest Hall Primary School building would be brought back into educational use.
Background information
The primary phase of Silverdale School is currently based at the Langdale Centre in Wallsend.
The Langdale Centre enabled the school to continue operating following the emergency relocation of primary-aged pupils from the satellite provision previously located within Grasmere Academy. However, the site was always intended as an interim solution rather than a long-term location for specialist Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) provision.
The building is a former middle school dating from the 1950s and was not designed to meet the needs of children with complex SEND. Although adaptations have been made, the site presents a number of challenges:
- The accommodation is not ideally suited to specialist primary SEND provision.
- The condition of the building means significant investment would be needed to maintain and improve it.
- The layout of the site can create additional challenges for the day-to-day management of the school.
- The building does not provide the long-term certainty needed for pupils, families and staff.
We believe there is a need for a more suitable and sustainable long-term home for the primary phase of Silverdale School.
Relocating the primary phase of Silverdale School to the site has the potential to provide:
- Improved teaching and learning spaces.
- Dedicated outdoor play and learning areas.
- A more cohesive school environment for pupils and staff.
- Greater stability and certainty for families.
- A long-term solution for specialist primary SEND provision.
The proposal would also ensure that a vacant school building continues to be used to support education within North Tyneside.
