Transforming Segedunum Roman Fort in Wallsend

In September / October 2024 consultation took place with residents of North Tyneside via an online survey to find out their views about the transformation of Segedunum Roman Fort in Wallsend.

Segedunum is part of the Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage Site and features surviving foundations of Roman buildings and part of Hadrian’s Wall itself. The museum includes a 35-metre-high viewing tower providing views across the site and along the River Tyne. The museum was opened in 2000 and after 25 years it is in need of transformation.

Residents were asked what improvements they would like to see at the museum and their answers included:

  • Displays telling the story of Roman soldiers and local people (93%)
  • A digital experience in the viewing tower showing what Segedunum would have looked like in Roman times (91%)
  • A tour of the Roman bathhouse (88%)
  • Outdoor seating and picnic area with river views (86%)
  • A gallery to explore local history including stories of the Swan Hunter shipyards and the area’s coal mining (85%)
  • A new cafe (84%)
  • Improved green spaces including gardens, wildlife and ecology areas (83%)

88% of respondents said they would be encouraged to visit Segedunum knowing these kinds of improvements had been made.

We have used this feedback to shape plans for transformation of the museum and site and we are in the process of applying for funding to support this.
