Protecting and improving the natural environment
We want to protect and enhance wildlife and habitats while building new homes and protecting green spaces for people to use.
We would welcome your feedback on the proposals.
Natural Environment
Natural environment (word version) / (pdf version)
North Tyneside, despite being a largely urban area has many places of importance for wildlife and plants including the internationally protected coast, River Tyne corridor and various areas of wetland and natural grassland sites.
What is being proposed in this consultation?
- Protect important wildlife and habitats from potential harm caused by development, including our rivers and the coast.
- Make sure developments help to improve nature by including new trees, grasses, flowers, and wetlands alongside new buildings or elsewhere if necessary — this is called Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG).
- Direct the planting of trees and hedgerows in the right places where they can thrive, help wildlife and make places look attractive.
- Support new development that can help repair contaminated or unstable land.
- Protect resources in the ground like limestone, sand and gravel. Even though we don’t dig it up now, we may need them in the future.
