Proposal to close Hazlewood Primary School
Consultation on the future of Hazlewood Primary School
We want to hear your views on the future of Hazlewood Primary School.
Hazlewood Primary School is facing significant challenges due to long-term structural problems affecting much of the main school building. Since these issues were identified in 2024, the Council has worked with the school to explore possible solutions and has invested in temporary accommodation and structural improvements to ensure education can continue safely.
These measures were never intended to provide a permanent solution.
At the same time, the number of children needing school places across North Tyneside has been falling. This means there are more school places available than there are children requiring them, including within the local area surrounding Hazlewood Primary School.
Hazlewood’s main school building is currently only partially accessible following some temporary repairs. The school is mainly operating out of modular buildings.
A replacement primary school building is estimated to cost around £7 million.
While the Council has consistently sought funding from government, no funding for this has been secured. The Council does not have the resources to fund a project of this scale without external support.
The continued use of temporary accommodation does not resolve the underlying condition of the building and there is ongoing uncertainty for pupils, families and staff.
The proposal
We are consulting on a proposal to:
Close Hazlewood Primary School from September 2028.
This would mean the school would stop admitting pupils to Reception from September 2027.
There would be no changes this academic year.
If, following this consultation, the proposal moves to the next phase we would work with the school leadership team and governing body - to agree a full timeline up to September 2028.
