Killingworth Lakeside Park tree thinning notice

Killingworth Lakeside Park

Tree Maintenance and Planting

Visitors to the park may notice our contractors at work maintaining the woodland.  This is in response to a detailed tree survey which showed a need for tree thinning, new planting and the removal of some trees.

The work will help with biodiversity, adding a greater mix of different tree species. It will help protect the future health of the woodland. The main work is the removal of ash trees that are suffering from Ash Dieback, a serious disease that is killing ash trees across Europe.

You may see our contractors clearing some shrubs or pruning the upper branches of large poplar and willow trees. This helps create more space for trees to grow and improves safety.

Due to the extent of the work, a tree felling license application has been submitted.  Most of the work will be done in the woodland areas on the western side of the park. These will be cordoned off as required. The rest of the park will be fully open to the public.

The tree thinning work will start in January 2025 for a period of approximately eight weeks.

Extensive tree and shrub planting and wildflower seeding will take place between January and March 2025.
