Access to Recycling in the North West of the Borough

We know that access to waste and recycling services in the north-west of the borough has been a long-standing concern. Many residents have raised this in consultations over several years. You’ve told us that travelling to the North Shields site can be difficult, and that having something closer would make it easier to recycle.

In response, we started work in March last year to explore whether there could be a suitable location in the north-west for a Household Waste and Recycling Centre. We are now developing this work further and seeking specialist advice, including on traffic and environmental impacts. We will keep you updated as this progresses.

Alongside this, we’ve been listening to your experiences of the pop-up waste events we’ve been running locally. So far, 594 residents have shared feedback through conversations with staff.

What you’ve told us so far shows that people are very engaged with recycling. Most respondents use the North Shields site at least once a year. Many rely on their car to get there, and while most people find disposing of waste straightforward, some still face difficulties.

There is strong support for continuing local pop-up events, and many residents have said they would welcome improved access to waste and recycling services in their area.
