North Tyneside is one of the safest boroughs in the country. Our Community Protection team works together with Northumbria Police and other partners to reduce housing-related anti-social behaviour and environmental crime.
This autumn, we've offered a choice of focus group sessions to share information with you and listen to what you have to say. Two sessions in September have been for council tenants and council leaseholders to focus on housing-related anti-social behaviour and how we handle that; and one session in October was open to all residents and focused on open spaces.
Our first two focus groups were for council tenants and leaseholders. We asked ‘what makes a good neighbourhood’ and participants replied with examples of neighbours looking out for each other, tolerance, respect for others and the area being clean and tidy. The groups were surprised to learn that reported cases in the borough are at their lowest level for five years. There was discussion on perception compared to reality; and the impact of targeted projects to tackle issues in hotspot areas. They then looked at the team’s case handling procedure. The groups felt this was broadly right, but asked if aspects around communication could be strengthened.
Thank you to everyone who took part. Both groups gave very thoughtful feedback, which will help the Community Protection team improve how we handle cases.
