North Tyneside wants to be a cleaner and greener place. This means using less energy, protecting nature, managing waste and making sure we’re ready for events like floods and hot weather caused by climate change.

North Tyneside Council declared a climate emergency in 2019. The Council wants to reduce the carbon emissions that are impacting our climate. This means being more efficient, protecting nature, and making sure we’re ready for events caused by climate change like floods and hot weather.

What is being proposed in this consultation?

  • Encourage homes that are designed to stay warm in winter and cool in summer.
  • Support government plans to make new homes energy efficient and carbon net zero ready.
  • Include trees and green spaces in development to help keep places cool.
  • Identify places that could be suitable for wind energy development.
  • Prevent flooding by using sustainable drainage systems and not building in areas of flood risk.
  • Protect the water in our rivers and the coast from pollution.
  • Support proposals for new waste management and recycling facilities in places that avoid harm to residents.
