100 years of Council Housing

A century of council housing provision in England was marked in 2019.

To celebrate this occasion, North Tyneside Council colleagues and tenants gathered at an event to follow and highlight the changes in the housing landscape across the borough in the last 100 years, starting from the first council house in the borough at Holy Cross in 1920, through the peak post-war building period in the 1950s, 14-storey flats in the 1960s, the introduction of 'Right to Buy' in 1980, the Private Finance Initiative for our sheltered housing in the 2010s and through to how tenants are involved in shaping the service today.

Featuring fascinating photographs and stories, the booklet attached to this page gives us a rich learning resource celebrating a century of housing for our tenants.
